2025 | Snowy New Orleans
When the weather forecast suggested a chance of snow in New Orleans for the 2025 NADA show, it seemed like a good idea to move our flight ahead a day. Just four hours after our arrival in the Big Easy, in the dead of the night, snow indeed started to fall. Snow continued falling throughout the day on Tuesday, January 21st until the city was completely shut down. All flights in and out of Louis Armstrong International Airport were cancelled. A city with no snow plows grappled with snowfall which didn’t stop until 12″ had accumulated on the cobblestone streets. The vintage street signs, evoking the coming Mardi Gras, were capped with white. The steamboat parked outside Jackson Square, covered. Café du Monde, world famous for covering its delicious beignets in a pile of confectioner’s sugar, was itself, covered in powder. And the city was quiet. Magical. Belonging only to those brave souls giddy enough to explore its old lanes trimmed with wrought iron, and today, a sound-dampening layer of snow.
While the schedule was to be shooting pre-show preparations of the 600 or so Cox Automotive staff scheduled to be in New Orleans for NADA, there was nothing to shoot. With only 20 team members present, themselves having little to do except help facilitate the safe arrival of the missing workforce, the day opened itself up for the photography opportunity of a lifetime. While the process had its challenges, (David flew in with dress shoes, not snow boots–and don’t forget how cold a snowy day is without gloves), the dreamy opportunity of shooting one of the most beautiful cities in the world as a winter wonderland, was.. a gift.
Ghosts are one of the many draws which bring visitors to New Orleans. But on this day, the ghosts most present were those of tourists, party-goers, and ne’er-do-wells who weren’t on the streets of one of the most captivating cities in America.
